AVGL has recently announced four brand new leagues for the 2021 Spring season featuring Apex, Rocket League, Warzone, and Fortnite, Collegiate Champions League. These new leagues bring more competition to the collegiate space and offer the first ever season based tournament for Warzone.

The AVGL is excited to bring student gamers a new genre of competition that isn’t traditionally offered. The initiative is helping develop and expand esports programs from the standard game titles such as League of Legends and Overwatch.

Community Leader of AVGL, Michael Slandzicki, aka “Slandz”, says he’s, “excited to offer these battle royale tournaments to colleges,” as he comes from a PUBG background and knows how these events operate. He also is curious to see which schools come out on top from these tournaments as it’s kind of a toss-up and most schools don’t have official teams yet.

Esports is a constantly evolving scene where game titles come and go faster than ever. Offering new and competitive leagues keeps coaches, directors and programs on the hunt for top talent for multiple game titles.

Coach of the Oklahoma University Esports Call of Duty team, Jody Farmer, says they signed up for the Collegiate Champions League because, “we had students who really love Warzone and I enjoyed playing AVGL last semester.” She also mentions that, “OU is hyped to have three CoD teams this semester!” Adding Warzone as their third and newest edition to their program.

The leagues will run anywhere from 3 weeks to 7 weeks depending on the title and offer as much as $4,000 in prizing per league. Players who sign up must attend an accredited college or university and attend the same school. These leagues will be an addition to AVGL Trials, a regular competition for high school and college players to compete against each other.
